Why are you a Christian?

As I sang Donnie’s McClurkin’s song “I’ve got my mind made up”, this morning, the chorus really spoke to me. It goes this way:
I’ve got my mind made up and I won’t turn back
Because I want to see my Jesus, someday"

After singing, it occurred to me that if we don’t know why we are doing something, it is so easy to become distracted.

As Christians, some of us have forgotten why we became Christians in the first place. Some of us admittedly were born into the faith, but somewhere along the line, we decided to become born-again or accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and saviour.

After that experience we were probably ‘hot’ for God, but as the years went by, we gradually settled into life. There are bills to pay, kids to raise, certificates to earn, parties to attend, husbands or wives to marry, ..etc. Basically there is life to live.

But the Bible over and over reminds us that we are here for a purpose and we do not have enough time. It talks about the “Day of the Lord” which shall come like a thief in the night and shall catch the unsuspecting unawares. Then there is also the issue of death, which can come suddenly without any warning.

As a result of these, shouldn’t we live our lives as the wise, making the most of the time we have been given on earth? Should we live as we please, following the ways of the world and believing the lies and deceit propagated daily? Or should we live our lives in accordance to what the Bible dictates? Shouldn’t we get rid of the weaknesses and wrong attitudes that so easily hinders us from running our race properly?

I don’t know about you, but I am not a Christian because it is the cool thing to be.
I am not a Christian because I want God to fight my battles.
I am not a Christian because I want to be popular.
I am not a Christian because I want to be rich or have a husband or have children.
I am not a Christian because I want to defeat witches and wizards.

I am a Christian because I appreciate the love of God in Christ and I want to see my Jesus someday. Whether that day comes through death or through the second coming of Christ, I want to be with my Jesus. And so I am committed to disciplining myself daily to be all that Christ wants me to be, to follow His leading and obey His promptings and His commands.

What about you, why are you a Christian?
